Post-Surgery

Medication
Apparently, back surgery is a big deal, well it is! I’m not the type of person who likes to catch a buzz and I don’t care for taking medication if I don’t need to. I’m very sensitive to it and often time, I even cut the dozes in half because it is too strong for me and gives me bad side effects. I never had any kind of surgery before so I had some expectations but didn’t really know what was coming. The first month after surgery was very difficult and painful but it was probably more strenuous on my mother than me since she cared for me 24/7 and that I have to admit, it is pretty much a blur for me at this time. That is mostly caused by the Oxycodone but that is one time of my life that I actually took the whole prescribed dose of medication! I was in so much pain but I think that it actually hurt my husband more to see me like that and not being able to provide more than comforting. Yes, I needed the drugs but I sure would have never made it through without him! In the end, it is important to heal both the mind and the body. While my family had my state of mind in their hands, my doctor had control of my physical healing. I was scared of getting addicted because it seems that we always hear of everyday people getting hooked on Oxy after back surgery. I tried to space out the pills a few times but the pain was excruciating. Then I talked to my cousin Sophie and she reassured me! She said that when our body is in an acute state such as post-surgery, the medication is there for a reason and it goes right where we need it. It is important to take the meds as prescribed, especially in the early stage, but also to not let the pain come. She said that people get addicted when taking the meds for a long period of time, especially when the wound is healed. It is when the pain is gone and that the person keeps taking the pills because they now like how it makes them feel that it is a dangerous state for addiction. Thanks to Dr. Smith, I only took Oxy for a month and that time is now behind me.
